Why Fall is a Fabulous Time to Plant Trees, Shrubs and Perennials

Why is fall the optimal time? The main reason is cooler temperatures, which are gentler on developing roots. Oftentimes the stress from hot weather can weaken plantings and it may look pretty sad until it can put down new roots and regain its vigor. By planting in the fall, you don't have to worry so much about heat causing a setback for your plants. Also, many Trees, Shrubs and Perennials start to go dormant in the fall, and if they don't have to expend energy on making leaves, they'll put energy into creating a strong root system. The ground tends to stay warm even as the air is cooling off, another encouragement for root growth. A strong root system will ensure a stronger plant come spring. Other benefits from fall planting are fewer insects and disease problems that could damage your new plantings.

Ornamental plants complement Fall Plantings. Ornamental kales range in color from white to red with green to purple foliage. Ornamental peppers produce bright red fruits that cover the plant and create a unique presence in the fall flower garden. Of Course Asters, Mums, Montauk Daisies add fabulous color in the fall flower garden. All these flowers are available in a variety of colors. Asters can range in color from purple and blue to pink and white. Chrysanthemums consist of burgundy, red, orange, pink, lavender, bronze, yellow, and white. When placed in mass plantings within the fall flower garden, these flowers will produce an intense, colorful show. Pansies really thrive in the cooler weather and when planted in fall they often rebloom in spring. Ornamental grasses reach their peak during fall and can also add texture, volume, and color to the fall flower garden. Many of these develop seed heads after flowering has ceased, and their foliage will turn golden-brown.

Additional features to consider in a fall flower garden include statues, ponds and stones. These can further intensify your fall planting by providing supplementary height and focal interest. Creating a fall flower garden can extend seasonal interest beyond the spring and summer months. Fall can definitely be a Fabulous time in your Garden.
